Announcement – May 2020

Hi Everyone.
We hope that you have all come through the lock down safely and we would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding with us when we could only supply emergency treatments.

We are now in a position to provide routine dental treatments from the 25th of May. This will be phased in, as per the guidelines of the HSE and the Dental Council.

We are following social distancing – which will be difficult for all of us but it is the safest way forward. Consequently only patients with appointments can come to the surgery and when you arrive please ring us and we will bring you in as soon as it is safe to do so.

Please bring minimal personal belongings into the practice as we cannot allow anything but yourself into the surgery. The toilet facilities unfortunately will not be in use and if possible no cash payments please.

When you attend for an appointment only the patient will be able to come into the practice. There will be a questionnaire to fill in as per the HSE instructions to make sure all patients and staff stay safe.

This is new to all of us – It is a learning experience. So if you have any ideas on how we can improve, please let us know. We are in this together

As of yesterday we have decided to close our doors at the practice for all routine and non essential treatment as we feel it is in our best interest to keep all our patients and staff safe!

However we are still going to be operating by running an EMERGENCY CLINIC ONLY between Monday – Friday for anyone in pain. In order to protect patients and staff we will have some new procedures to follow regarding arranging these emergency appointments.

Can you please call us on 01-6272238, first thing in the morning between 8am-10am if your in need of an EMERGENCY appointment. If we can’t answer please leave a clear voice message on answering machine and we will get back to you as soon as we can with an arranged appointment time. When your due to arrive at the clinic we can only have one patient within the surgery at any given time so please wait outside or in your car and we will ring your contact number when its safe for you to come in and see the dentist. New figures from the Department of Social Protection show that almost two million Irish people are entitled to a free dental examination under their PRSI dental benefit.

However only 298,000 people, or less than 15% actually availed of the free annual examination in 2013.

The new President of the Irish Dental Association Peter Gannon said it was clear we must try harder to encourage people to avail of the examination they have in effect already paid for.

“New research shows that over half or 54% of the two million people who are entitled to a free dental exam are not aware of it. This is not surprising given that it is  the single remaining benefit of the PRSI scheme and one the Department has never promoted it in any way” Dr Gannon said.

He was speaking to over 400 delegates who are attending the IDA annual conference which is taking place at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny.

Information compiled by the IDA shows that a worker who earns €50K a year pays €38.46 a week in PRSI – that’s €2K a year.

“The very least people deserve for paying this tax is to receive their entitlement and we are calling on the Government to facilitate that” Dr Gannon said.

It’s estimated that 4 out of 5 Irish adults have some form of gum disease yet surveys show that 85% of the population believe they have healthy teeth and gums. The IDA believes that if everyone who is entitled to an exam availed of it, the gum disease issue could be addressed.

The Association is proposing that the Revenue Commissioners include a dental voucher with the P60 document which is sent out to every tax payer via their employer every Januarly. The Association says their proposed scheme is simple and cost effective.

“The Government has reneged on its promises to review the PRSI and Medical Card schemes. This scheme would allow it to give something back to hard pressed taxpayers in a cost effective way. No expensive ad campaigns are involved. In one fell swoop every tax payer – including over 1m who aren’t even aware of the benefit – will have a tangible voucher in their hand and this we feel will encourage much greater take up of the scheme.

“Simple changes in the way people care for their teeth can make big improvements in oral health in the long term and will save money for patients and also for the state” Dr Gannon concluded.

Taking care of your teeth and gums

We have put together some great tips for taking car of your teeth and gums. Brush twice a day! If possible, brush after every meal.  Brushing removes plaque, a film of bacteria that clings to teeth. When bacteria in plaque come into contact with food, they produce acids. These acids lead to cavities.

To brush properly follow these instructions:

1. Put a small dab of fluoride toothpaste on the head of the toothbrush. (Use a soft toothbrush.)
2. Place the toothbrush against the teeth at a 45-degree angle up to the gum line.
3. Move the brush across the teeth using a small circular motion. Continue with this motion cleaning one tooth at a time. Keep the tips of the bristles against the gum line. Avoid pressing so hard that the bristles lie flat against the teeth. (Only the tips of the toothbrush clean the teeth.) Let the bristles reach into spaces between teeth.
4. Brush across the top of the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Make sure the bristles get into the grooves and crevices.
5. Use the same small circular motion to clean the backside of the upper and lower teeth — the side that faces the tongue.
6. To clean the inside of the bottom front teeth, angle the head in an up-and-down position toward the bottom inside of the mouth and move the toothbrush in a small circle.
7. For the inside of the top front teeth, angle the brush in an up-and-down position with the tip of the head pointing towards the roof of the mouth. Move the toothbrush in a small circle.
8. Give your tongue a few gentle brush strokes, brushing from the back of your tongue forward. Do not scrub. This helps remove bacteria and freshens your breath.
9. After brushing your teeth for two to three minutes, rinse your mouth with water.
10. Replace your toothbrush with a new one every three to four months.

We are sad to say that one of our female dentists, Orla Shanahan,  has moved to Waterford permanently. She will be missed by us all, both staff and patients and we wish her well for the future. Orla is due to marry her fiance, Brian this Saturday in Co. Cork and we look forward to celebrating this occasion with her. We are delighted to welcome Davina to our team in Orla’s place. Davina is a trinity graduate and a local girl from Leixlip. She is thrilled to be located locally and looks forward to meeting you all.

Opening Times for the Christmas week will vary from the normal schedule. Please see the dates and time changes below. For further information about bookings, etc, please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs over the festive period.

• Friday 21st of December normal hours 8.30 am-5.30 pm.
• Saturday 22nd of December normal hours 8.30 am-12.30 pm.
• CLOSED Sunday 23rd December to Thursday 27th of December.
• CLOSED Sunday 30th of December until Wednesday the 2nd of January 2013 when normal office hours will resume.

Emergency cover will be available on Friday 28th of December and Saturday the 29th of December. If you need to avail of this service please call the office from 9.30 am on Friday the 28th of December and we will get you looked after as quick as possible.

Congratulations to Annamarie our hygienist on the birth of her son. Master Aodhfin Matthew arrived on the 31st of October weighing a healthy 7 lb.14 Oz. We wish Annamarie, Conor her husband and big sister Eve all well for the future. Annamarie will return from maternity leave in April 2013. In the mean time Lisa Murphy her fellow Hygienist and friend is looking after her patients. Lisa covered for Annamarie in 2010 when she was on maternity leave with her first baby so many of you will know Lisa from before.

We also would like to congratulate Dr. Orla Shanahan one of our dentists on her recent engagement. Orla will be tying the knot to Brian in their native city of Cork in August 2013. We wish them well and look forward to the celebration.

Top Tips For Better Dental Health

A Toothbrush Is Not For Life,
It’s Just For Three Months!

1. For consistent cleaning, brush your teeth and gums at the same time every day, e.g. after breakfast and before going to bed. Supervise children under seven.

2. Only use the recommended amount of toothpaste and ensure all teeth and gums are cleaned thoroughly. You can use different sized inter-dental brushes to clean plaque from inaccessible areas.

3. Make a special effort to quit smoking. Smoking is a major cause of preventable death and oral problems include bad breath, stained teeth, tooth loss and oral cancer. Your dentist can advise.

4. Change your toothbrush every three months and make sure to floss at least once a day.

5. Take time to read the sugar content of your food and drink and reduce intake of high sugar content foods. Keep snacks between meals to low-sugar or sugar-free foods.

6. Remember there is a relationship between oral health and general health and ask your dentist if a visit to your medical practitioner is appropriate.

7. Make a resolution to visit your dentist regularly so that small problems can be resolved before they become bigger, more complicated and expensive.

8. If you decide to whiten your teeth, make sure to discuss with your dentist who can ensure safe and professional teeth whitening under the care of a qualified dental practitioner.

9. Arrange preventative fissure sealants for children reaching the age of six or seven as directed by your dentist. Follow up at six or twelve months intervals.

10. If you notice ulcers or lumps in your mouth or neck persisting for more than a week, arrange to have an oral cancer screening appointment with your dentist.
